Mechanism of Action

VIP (Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide) is a 28-amino acid neuropeptide of the secretin/glucagon family, acting via VPAC1 and VPAC2 receptors (Gs-coupled GPCRs). It inhibits pro-inflammatory cytokine production (TNF-alpha, IL-6, IL-12) in activated macrophages and dendritic cells via cAMP/PKA-mediated NF-kB suppression. It also promotes regulatory T-cell (Treg) differentiation, relaxes vascular and bronchial smooth muscle, and modulates gastrointestinal motility and secretion.
