Mechanism of Action

Erythropoietin (EPO) is a 30.4 kDa glycoprotein hormone produced primarily by renal peritubular cells in response to hypoxia. Recombinant EPO (rHuEPO) binds the EPO receptor (EPOR) on erythroid progenitor cells in bone marrow, activating JAK2-STAT5 signalling, which drives proliferation and differentiation of burst-forming units-erythroid (BFU-E) and colony-forming units-erythroid (CFU-E) into mature erythrocytes.
